SHARKS SWIM PAST BLUEFISH
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 5, 2010
The Camden Riversharks defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish with a score of 4-1 in the series opener played at Campbell’s Field on Friday evening. Ben Davis earned the win and improves his record to 1-0, while Denny Stark of the Bluefish was charged with the loss.
It was a pitcher’s duel for the first five innings under the lights. Bridgeport’s pitcher, Patrick Ryan let up three hits while Ben Davis of the Riversharks allowed four. Davis pitched seven shutout innings and had three double plays turned behind him before he was replaced by Ryan McKeller in the eighth.
It was the home team that broke through the scoreless five innings. Brian Burgamy singled past the first baseman to drive in Garrett Guzman. Brett Bonvechio, who made his second start since being activated, scored Richie Robnett on a base hit to make the score 2-0.
The Riversharks extended their lead in the seventh. Kyle Haines led off the inning with a base hit. Shea Harris followed and was given a free pass to first after being hit in the helmet by Bluefish reliever, Stark. Two batters laters, Haines scored on Guzman’s at bat, and Jason Botts followed with a grounder through the center, which allowed Harris to tack on the fourth run of the game.
Bridgeport’s offense was able to tally one run on in the final inning. It was Brandon Chaves who ripped a lead-off triple into deep center field. Colin Robertson followed with a hit that bounced off Neal, giving him the out at first, but opportunity to score Chaves.
The Riversharks will square off with the Bridgeport Bluefish two more times to determine the series. Tomorrow night Steven Sharpe will take the mound against Marc Kaiser of the Bluefish.
