BEARS CLIPPED BY CRABS

(Newark, N.J., Jun. 2, 2010) - Designated hitter Matt Craig had two hits and three RBI and Kenny Rayborn pitched 5 2/3 innings for his third win of the season, leading the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to an 8-4 victory over the Newark Bears Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Blue Crabs took the lead in the top of the fourth inning on an Eric Crozier blast to right field off Vince Perkins. Southern Maryland added another run in the fourth on two straight errors and a safety squeeze RBI bunt from Richard Giannotti to make it 2-0. The lead grew to three runs in the fifth on Craig’s first RBI, a run-scoring single. A four-run sixth for the ‘Crabs made it a 7-0 advantage as Casey Benjamin had an RBI single and Craig delivered a two-run single in that rally.
The Bears rallied for three runs in the home sixth on run-scoring singles by Stephen Shults, Tom Pennino and Kennard Jones, slicing the lead to 7-3. The Blue Crabs added a run in the seventh on Octavio Martinez’ RBI double, pushing the lead back to five runs. Edgardo Alfonzo’s RBI single in the home eighth scored Jones with the final run of the game. Jones and Daryle Ward each registered three hits for Newark.
Rayborn (3-3) allowed two runs and seven hits during his stint, walking three and striking out a season-high five batters. Rayborn was one of four pitchers used by the Blue Crabs. Craig and Benjamin keyed the Blue Crabs’ 10-hit attack with two hits each.
The Bears conclude the seven-game home stand on Thursday night. Game is set for 6:35 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 5:35 p.m. Thursday night is “Thirsty Thursday”, presented by Budweiser and Pepsi. Fans can enjoy discounts on beer and soda at the concession stands throughout the night. Thursday is also “Jewish Heritage Night”. The Israel National Anthem will be performed with the Israel flag flying with the American flag.
