Somerset Declaws Bears
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 31, 2010
(Newark, N.J., May 30, 2010) - Josh Miller scattered seven hits over seven innings for his fourth win of the season and recent signee Zach Smithlin had two hits and two RBI, leading the Somerset Patriots to an 8-2 win over the Newark Bears and Sunday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Patriots jumped on Bears starter and Paul Fagan for one run in the second inning and two more in the third. Matt Hagen led off the second with a double and came home on an RBI single by David Housel. In the third, the Patriots scored twice on a groundout by Noah Hall, his first of two RBI on the night, and an RBI single from Hagen.
The Bears cut the lead to 3-2 in the third inning on RBI singles from James Cooper and Scott Spiezio, but Miller shut the door after that, allowing just two hits over the next four frames. Miller walked only one and struck out four and threw only 31 of his 100 pitches off the plate. Brian Henderson pitched a perfect eighth inning and two relievers finished up.
Former Bear Michael Hernandez hit his second homer in as many nights, a blast to right-center field, to push the lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Hall’s second RBI of the game, a run-scoring single, brought Iggy Suarez home in the fifth inning.
Somerset added some insurance in the eighth inning off reliever Chris Vasami, scoring three times, when Hernandez doubled and came home to score on a double by Suarez, and Smithlin, the Fair Lawn native who was added to the Somerset roster before the game, delivered a two-run single, pushing the lead to 8-2. Hagen and Hernandez had two hits each for the Patriots. Cooper was the lone Bears player with more than one hit, delivering two singles and an RBI.
