Hernandez Powers Patriots To 4-2 Win
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 31, 2010
Bridgewater, NJ – Michael Hernandez homered for the third consecutive game, launching a two-run shot to right in the sixth, propelling the Somerset Patriots to a 4-2 win over the York Revolution in front of 5.831 on Memorial Day Monday at TD Bank Ballpark.
Hernandez’s home run off of York starter Corey Thurman gave the Patriots a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Matt Hagen led off the frame with a double. The home run turned out to be the game-winning hit as the Revolution added a tally in the eighth inning off of Jeff Kennard but Ryan Houston pitched a scoreless ninth to ensure the victory, the third in a row for Somerset.
The Patriots led by just a run after the top of the sixth as starter Tom Mastny delivered a fine outing allowing a lone run in the fifth inning. Both Mastny (3-2) and fellow ex-Big Leaguer Thurman went 6.0 innings, allowing just five hits.
Somerset took a third-inning lead on a botched pick-off attempt by Thurman with two outs. Zach Smithlin took off from first but after being caught in a rundown, he bought enough time for Wayne Lydon to take off from third and score, giving the Patriots the early lead. Somerset extended the advantage in the fourth on a two-out Jason Belcher RBI, bringing home Hagen. The Patriots have defeated the Revolution in all four meetings this season and grow their lead to two games in the Freedom Division.
The first-place Patriots (21-14) now get set for game two of this four-game series with the Revolution (20-17). Left-hander Justin Jones (3-1, 4.55) faces newly acquired Jacob Marceaux (0-0, 0.00) on Tuesday when coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark on WCTC-AM and online at www.wctcam.com and www.somersetpatriots.com.
NOTES: Hernandez’s homer was the 51st of his professional career…Mastny’s start was the third quality outing of the season…Noah Hall went 0-4, snapping his seven-game hit streak…Iggy Suarez also did not tally a hit, ending his five-game hit streak. Suarez left the game in the eighth inning after feeling dehydrated. Elliott Ayala entered at shortstop…Ben Grezlovski threw another shutout inning in the seventh. He has thrown seven straight scoreless innings…the five hits by Somerset marks the lowest total in a win this season, the second time that has happened this year…the Patriots are 9-1 against Freedom Division opponents this season.
