By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 31, 2010
Camden, NJ – In a back and forth sea saw affair the Camden Riversharks prevailed to pick up the first win of the series against the Long Island Ducks, 8-4. The Sharks returned to Campbell’s Field coming off of a shutout win against the Bridgeport Bluefish the day before. They carried that energy to their home stadium, tallying 8 runs and 14 hits for the day. Ryan McKellar was awarded the win for today’s game to give him his first win of the 2010 season (1-3). Sidney Ponson was charged with the loss (3-5).
To lead off the bottom of the first, Chris Walker reached on an error by second baseman, Bridget Hunt. He proceeded to steal second then advanced to third on Kyle Haines’ bunt. Walker was driven in by Garrett Guzman who was put out at first on a fielder’s choice. Richie Robnett singled to center field to advance Guzman who would be driven in during the next at bat on Jason Botts’ base hit.
The Ducks answered back after a few innings of play to tie the game. Johnny Hernandez struck with a two run homer placed just over the right field wall in the fourth. Long Island gained the lead in the sixth with Brenden Monaghan doubling to score Hernandez who walked prior during his at bat. Ryan McKeller entered the game for the Riversharks and proceeded to strike out the next two batters to keep the deficit at one.
Camden swiftly tacked on another two runs in the next half inning then secured the win with four more in the seventh driven in by Guzman on a sacrifice fly, Robnett on a fielder’s choice, and singles from both Brian Burgamy and Chris Malec.
The Camden Riversharks continue their four game series against the Long Island Ducks tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Tomorrow evening is KIDS EAT FREE night at Campbell’s Field. Steve Hammond will take the mound for the Camden Riversharks against Long Island’s Randy Leek.
