SHULTS SLAMS PATRIOTS
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 29, 2010
(Newark, N.J., May 28, 2010) - Stephen Shults had three hits, but the biggest was the one-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning, snapping a 3-3 tie, giving the Newark Bears a 7-3 victory over the Somerset Patriots Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Patriots took an early lead, scoring two runs off Perkins in the top of the first. Wayne Lydon led off with a walk, followed by a single from Joe Holden. After a double steal, Matt Hagen drove in a run on a ground out and Joe Burke brought home Holden with a sacrifice fly. The Bears cut the lead to 2-1 in the home first, when Nook Logan reached on an error, stole second and scored on Scott Spiezio’s double.
Somerset pushed the lead to 3-1 when Lydon reached on an error and came around to score on three consecutive fielder’s choices, the final one by Hagen plating a run, his second RBI of the night.
Newark began their comeback, scoring one run in the fifth inning when Kennard Jones got the second of his three hits and scored on a sacrifice fly by John-Ford Griffin. Shults singled and came around to score on an error to tie the game at 3-3, setting up the dramatic seventh inning.
Shults had two singles prior to coming to bat in the seventh with the bases loaded against Patriots reliever Casey Cahill and deposited the second pitch from Cahill over the left field wall for his first homer as a Bear. It was also the first grand slam of the season for the Bears. Spiezio got things started with his second double of the game, then with one out, Griffin walked and James Cooper was hit by a pitch, sending Shults to the plate with the bases loaded. Shults delivered the homer and the Bears went on to gain the win.
