PENA ADDED TO ‘FISH TANK

(Bridgeport, Conn. – May 29, 2010) – The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of infielder Wily Mo Pena. The former Major Leaguer joins the Bluefish for his first season in the Atlantic League and 12th of professional baseball.
“We are thrilled to add a slugger like Pena to this ballclub,” says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. “With his experience, we expect him to make a large impact both on the field and in the clubhouse.”
Last year, the former Major Leaguer played for the Buffalo Bisons (AAA) of the New York Mets organization. In 41 games with Buffalo he recorded a batting average of .276 with 40 hits, five home runs, and 21 RBI.
The 28-year-old made his Major League debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2002 after four impressive seasons in the minors. His best season in the big leagues was in 2004 with the Reds, where in 84 games, he batted .259 with 26 home runs and 66 RBI in 276 at-bats. From 2007 – 2008 he played in 101 games for the Washington Nationals. During seven seasons in the Majors, Pena has accumulated an overall batting average of .253 with 77 home runs and 225 RBI.
Pena was originally signed by the New York Yankees in 1998 as an undrafted free agent.
