(Newark, N.J., May 13, 2010) – The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears 2-1 on Thursday night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

It was a pitcher’s duel early between the Bears’ Matt Smith and Bridgeport’s Paul Oseguera.  Smith struck out five batters and allowed just four base runners through three scoreless innings.  Oseguera allowed two runners in the first, but retired four straight including a 1-2-3 second.  The Bears broke through in the third inning with the back-to-back singles followed by a Kennard Jones sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position.  Daryle Ward drove one in with a RBI groundout and it was 1-0 Newark.

The Bluefish pushed ahead in the fourth with the first two batters reaching base.  Joe Jiannetti ripped a two-run double to left-center to give Bridgeport the 2-1 advantage, one they would never relinquish.

Oseguera (2-1) earned the win, hurling eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits, with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.  Smith (2-2) suffered the loss with two earned runs on four hits, while striking out eight in seven and one-third innings.

Newark’s six-game road trip continues Friday night as they begin a three-game series with the York Revolution.  Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.  Fans can tune into all the action via streaming webcast at www.newarkbears.com with David Greenwald providing the play-by-play.
