Ducks Comeback on Barnstormers, 3-2
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 16, 2009
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 15, 2009) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 3-2 on Wednesday before a past-capacity crowd of 6,295 at Citibank Park.
The Flock continued their early game dominance this season as they cracked the scoreboard first in the home first. Ray Navarrete doubled down the left field line and came around to score as Estee Harris’ RBI double found a gap in right center to make it 1-0 Ducks.
Ducks’ starter Randy Leek and Stormers’ hurler Jason Scobie kept the scoreboard unchanged over the next four innings. Leek retired six in a row at one point, including a perfect fifth. Scobie matched Leek as he retired six of the seven batters he faced between the second and third innings.
Lancaster reached Leek in the sixth. Lloyd Turner drilled a two-out triple into right field followed by a Michael Woods’ two-run shot to left field and the Barnstormers pushed ahead 2-1.
Long Island came back with a pair in the bottom of the eighth after Leek and Scobie turned the game over to the bullpens. Juan Francia walked and Lew Ford dropped a single into shallow center to put runners on the corners. Preston Wilson plated Francia on a RBI single and the game was square at two. Estee Harris walked to load the bases and Victor Rodriguez plated the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly and the Ducks were on top 3-2.
Leek did not factor in the decision as he fired a season-high seven and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs and seven hits, while striking out five. Joe Valentine picked up the win working one-third of an inning and Bill Simas locked up his league-best 15th save with a scoreless ninth.
