Newark Nails Down Barnstormers
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 14, 2009
Newark, NJ – The Newark Bears defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 4-1 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.
Lancaster scored their only run in the first inning after Matt Watson’s RBI single drove in second baseman Lloyd Turner.
Three of the four runs for Newark were homers – Rob Mackowiak crushed a home run in his second game back as a Newark Bear and Carl Everett launched his twelfth homer of the season in the fourth, quickly followed by a home run off the bat of Michael Hernandez.
Newark’s Ramiro Mendoza pitched like he was still at Yankee Stadium, taking the win after seven innings on the mound, striking out four and allowing only one earned run. Armando Benitez notched his seventh save of the season after allowing just one hit in the ninth inning. Lancaster’s Eric Ackerman recorded the loss.
