(Central Islip, N.Y., July 13, 2009) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 4-3 on Monday before a past-capacity crowd of 6,171 at Citibank Park.
The Ducks struck first in the first off Blue Crabs’ starter Ryan Bicondoa using two base hits to plate a run. Estee Harris led off the frame with a single and came home on a RBI single off the bat of Preston Wilson to make it 1-0 Flock.
The Blue Crabs came back with a run in the top of the second off Ducks’ hurler B.J. LaMura. Three straight one-out hits, capped off by Octavio Martinez’ RBI single, tied the game at one. In the third, James Shanks and Jeremy Owens hit back-to-back solo home runs to center field and pushed the lead to 3-1 Southern Maryland.
The ball kept flying out of Citibank Park in the home third. Preston Wilson blasted his fifth homer to right field and plated Ray Navarrete, who was aboard after a leadoff single. Wilson’s long ball knotted the game up at 3-3.
Both starters kept the scoreboard unblemished before the game was turned over to the bullpens. LaMura exited in the sixth followed by reliever Cory Doyne, who made his Ducks debut working a scoreless seventh, and Joe Valentine with a perfect eighth. Bicondoa left the mound in the seventh followed by Derrick Ellison and Mike James with a scoreless eighth.
