Pats Take Sharks, 6-2
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 13, 2009
Camden, NJ – The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots today, by a final score of 6-2. Camden pitcher Josh Newman (0-2) suffered the loss, as he gave up 2 runs and 2 hits in just 1 inning of work. Somerset reliever Jared Gothreaux (4-5) recorded the win, as he tossed two innings of hitless ball, while striking out two batters. With the loss, the Riversharks’ season tally falls to 1-3, while the Patriots improve to 3-1.
The Patriots struck first in this game and took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning. With the bases loaded, Riversharks’ starter Tom Davey walked Somerset’s Travis Anderson, allowing Teuris Olivares to score. Two batters later, Mike Rodriguez picked up his 23rd RBI of the season when his groundout to 2nd base drove home Jason Belcher.
The Sharks answered back in the bottom of the 3rd inning and tied the game at 2-2. With two runners in scoring position, designated hitter Jose Leon crushed a line drive to right field, plating Wayne Lydon and Jon Knott.
After three consecutive scoreless innings, Somerset once again broke the game open in the 7th inning. An RBI single by Sean Smith scored Anderson, and gave the visitors a one run lead. Smith then stole second base and scored when a ground ball trickled through the legs of Camden’s Bryant Nelson, making the score 4-2.
The Patriots added to their lead in the 8th inning, as Riversharks reliever Michael Flannery struggled to find command of his pitches. After hitting two batters and loading the bases, Flannery surrendered a walk to Matt Hagen, bringing Anderson around to score, and giving Somerset a 5-2 lead.
Somerset added an insurance run in the top of the 9th inning, courtesy of an RBI double by Anderson. With a 6-2 lead, the Patriots put the game in the hands of closer Brian Henderson, who retired the side in order, and secured the win for the visitors.
The Riversharks will be back in action on Tuesday night at 7:05pm, when they will welcome the Bridgeport Bluefish to town for a three game series. Limited seating for the game is still available. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
