Newark Defeats Lancaster, 7-6

Newark, NJ – The Newark Bears defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 7-6 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.
The Bears pulled together in the ninth inning to overcome a two run deficit. Rob Mackowiak, who re-signed with the Bears today, hit a single and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Salomon Manriqez. Victor Mercedes’ line drive to center field drove in the winning two runs of the game. Tike Redman went three for four and notched another stolen base, and designated hitter Carl Everett went three for three, scoring twice and recording his forty-seventh RBI of the season.
Lancaster gathered six runs, including another home run from former Newark Bear Gerard Haran and from shortstop Aaron Herr, who scored twice and registered two RBI.
On his first day as a Newark Bear, right-hander Franklin Perez pitched for five innings, striking out six and allowing four earned runs. Armando Benitez pitched for one inning, striking out one, allowing no earned runs to record his first win of the season.
This is the first win for Newark in the second half of the season, and the first loss for Lancaster.
The Bears and Barnstormers face each other for the final game of their four game series tomorrow at 7:05pm.
