By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 7, 2009
Waldorf, MD – After clinching the first-half title for the Liberty Division on their recent road trip to Newark and Somerset, the Blue Crabs returned back to the friendly confines of Regency Furniture Stadium on Monday night for the series opener against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Southern Maryland jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the third inning. Lancaster starter Trey Hodges went two innings, giving up 6 runs, but picked up a no decision. Lancaster rallied in the middle innings to keep the game close. Crabs’ starter Joe Gannon went 7.2 innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits. However, he left the game with the Blue Crabs leading 7-6. Mike James blew the save for the Blue Crabs in the ninth inning, giving up two runs as Lancaster took an 8-7 lead. However, John Ramistella kept the Blue Crabs alive with a two out homerun to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. The Blue Crabs had a chance to win it in the 11th inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. However, they failed to score when Ramistella lined out and Acey was caught off third base. Nick Abel then picked up a timely strikeout to continue the game. In the top of the 13th inning, Byron Batson gave up a home run to Lancaster’s L.J. Biernbaum. Ross Peeples came in and picked up his second save of the season for the Barnstormers. Abel (1-0) got the win in relief after blowing a save. Batson (2-3) picked up the loss. The game was the longest of the season in time and innings for the Blue Crabs, going 4:48.
