Sharks Down Bears, 7-6
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 3, 2009
Camden, NJ – The Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears tonight, by a final score of 7-6. The win was given to Camden pitcher Dewon Brazelton (3-4), who pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 3 batters. Newark’s Matt Melody (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he gave up 4 runs, and 9 hits in 3.2 innings of work. With the win, the Riversharks’ season tally improves to 29-35, while Newark’s falls to 33-32.
The Riversharks opened the scoring in the third inning of the game and took a one run lead. With runners on the corners, third baseman Brett Bonvechio slapped a single to right field, driving home Jon Knott, and giving Camden a 1-0 lead.
The Sharks extended their lead in the 4th inning, as they tacked on 3 more runs. With a runner in scoring position, second baseman Junior Spivey ripped a double to right field that plated Chris Walker. The next batter was Knott, who drew a walk, putting two base runners aboard. Then catcher Jason Jacobs stepped to the plate and drove a double to left field that scored both Spivey and Knott, and gave the home team a 4-0 lead.
Camden’s offense continued to click in the 5th inning. With two runners on base, first baseman Vito Chiaravollotti doubled to center field, bringing Bryant Nelson and Knott around to score. The next batter was Jacobs, who singled up the middle, allowing Chiaravollotti to score from second base, and giving the Riversharks a 7-0 lead.
The Bears finally got onto the scoreboard in the 7th inning, and cut the Riversharks lead down to 7-1. Left fielder Charlton Jimerson led off the inning with a double to left for the Bears, and then scored when Michael Sandoval stepped to the plate and followed suit.
The Bears continued to claw away at their deficit in the 8th inning. Camden reliever Josh Newman first balked in a run, and then allowed another to cross the plate courtesy of a wild pitch. An RBI single by Newark’s Felix Martinez followed, and made the score 7-4 in favor of the home team.
With a three run lead in the 9th inning, the Riversharks put the ball in the hands of closer Felix Rodriguez. Despite giving up a two run homerun to Carl Everett, Rodriguez managed to close the door on the Bears, and lead Camden to a 7-6 victory. The save was Rodriguez’s fourth of the year.
The Riversharks and Bears will play game three of their four game series tomorrow at 5:35pm. Left handed pitcher Ryan DiPietro (0-2, 3.76) will take the hill for the Sharks. Limited seating for the game is still available. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
