Prieto’s game-winning hit propels Flock to win
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 21, 2009
(Central Islip, N.Y., June 21, 2009) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers on Sunday 2-1 before a past-capacity crowd of 6,126 and 500th sellout in franchise history at Citibank Park.
The Ducks, who are celebrating their 10th Anniversary Season, sold out their 500th game in club history and celebrated in style as the Ducks waddled off for the third time this season.
A RBI groundout off the bat of Matt Cavagnaro in the third gave the Flock an early 1-0 lead. The Barnstormers tied it up with one in the sixth off Ducks’ starter Julio Manon. Lloyd Turner’s RBI double plated Quincy Foster, who walked earlier in the inning.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. Johnny Hernandez led off the frame with a base hit to right field and was sacrificed over to second by John Pachot. Alex Prieto then came to bat and served the very first pitch he saw from ‘Stormers reliever Ryan Cullen (4-3) into left field to give the Ducks the victory.
Manon went six and two-thirds, allowing six hits and one run, while striking out five. Billy Simas (2-1) picked up the win firing a scoreless ninth.
The Ducks will enjoy three days off for the Atlantic League All-Star Break and then begin a four-game series on Thursday against the Camden Riversharks. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m at Campbell’s Field. Fans can tune into all the action live via streaming webcast at www.liducks.com, with Casey Lynn calling the play-by-play. The Ducks return home on Monday, June 29th, to host the York Revolution at Citibank Park. First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m., and the ballpark gates open at 5:35 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Quackers, courtesy of Newsday.
