Pats Cook Crabs, 14-1

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 14-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening. Patriots center fielder Sean Smith set a team record with six hits in the game.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Smith singled and would later score on an RBI groundout by first baseman Josh Pressley.
Somerset added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Anthony Granato singled and moved to third on a double by Smith. Right fielder Mike Rodriguez drove home Granato with an RBI groundout. Designated hitter Jeff Nettles plated Rodriguez with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots extended the lead with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Left fielder Joe Burke singled and moved to third on double by Granato. Smith drove home both runs with a two-run double and scored on an error for a 6-0 advantage.
Somerset continued to roll with two more runs. Nettles walked, catcher Travis Anderson doubled, and third baseman Teuris Olivares hit a two-run double to plate Nettles and Anderson. Smith then drove home Olivares with an RBI single to make the score 9-0.
The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Rodriguez that scored Smith, who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Blue Crabs broke up the shutout on a solo home run by right fielder John Ramistella (5) to make the score 10-1.
Somerset scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning after RBI hits by Burke, Granato, Smith, and Rodriguez for the 14-1 final.
Patriots starter Kip Bouknight (4-4) picked up the win, allowing just one hit in seven scoreless innings. Southern Maryland starter Kenny Rayborn (4-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday afternoon with a 1:35 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The game features a Father’s Day Celebration that includes Golf Balls (1st 1,000 Men 18 & Over) courtesy of The Law Offices of Jamison Mark, a pre-game Baseball Clinic, and a Fathers and Kids’ Catch on the field. There will also be a pre-game Autograph Session and all Dads and Kids get to Run The Bases after the game.
