York Splits DH With Ducks
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 7, 2009
York, PA – The York Revolution had to settle for a split in their day-night doubleheader, dropping the nightcap 10-3 to the Long Island Ducks in front of 6,142 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Saturday night. The Revs, having taken two of the first three in the series, will go for a series win on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
The Revs jumped ahead early on Matt Rogelstad’s two-run single to right with two outs in the first, but Long Island starter Julio Manon settled in from there. The right-hander retired eight straight after Rogelstad’s hit. Then after Rogelstad and Colin Roberson both singled with two outs in the fourth, threatening to extend the lead, Manon went on to retire the final 13 that he faced.
Manon (2-1) went 8.0 innings for the second straight start, allowing just five hits and two runs, while walking one and striking out seven.
Meanwhile, York starter Corey Thurman held the Ducks scoreless through the first four innings on just two hits, and faced the minimum the first time through the order.
Things changed in the fifth, however, when Estee Harris fouled off several pitches before leading off with a single off the base of the wall in right. Lew Ford then got the Ducks on the board with a double off the top of the Arch Nemesis in left plating Harris. After a bunt hit, Dennis Donovan tied the game on a double into the left field corner. Rob Sandora put Long Island on top with a two-run single to right, and Ray Navarette capped the inning with an RBI single to left-center. All totaled, the Ducks plated five in the inning on seven hits.
Long Island added two more in the seventh on an RBI single by Victor Rodriguez, and Harris’ sac fly to center. Two more Ducks then crossed in the eighth, as Johnny Hernandez drove a two-run double to the gap in left-center. Harris put on the finishing touches in the ninth with a solo homerun to right-center.
The Revs managed one in the bottom of the ninth, as Bill Simas loaded the bases with walks, and Josh Johnson slapped an RBI single into left.
The loss snapped the Revs’ season-best three-game home winning streak.
Bob Zimmermann (1-0) will make the start for the Revs on Sunday, facing Long Island’s Mike Hrynio (0-0). It is Cancer Survivor’s Day at Sovereign Bank Stadium, and the Revs will wear their Pink Jerseys presented by Heritage Valley Federal Credit Union, which will be auctioned off during the game with proceeds benefiting the York Cancer Center. It is also an Autograph Sunday with Catch on the Field before the game, and Kids Run the Bases postgame presented by rabbittransit.
