Bears and Crabs Split DH

Newark, NJ – The Newark Bears recorded a loss and a win today at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium during the Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
In game one, Newark’s Charlton Jimmerson put Newark on the board in the first inning, crushing a solo homerun, his fifth of the season. In his first game as a Newark Bear, first baseman Brandon Buckman scored what would be the final run for Newark in the fourth.
Southern Maryland came alive in the sixth inning when Blue Crab infielder Eric Crozier hit a 2 run homer, his eighth of the season. Newark failed to answer, and fell by one run.
Newark took its 22nd win this season in game two, defeating Southern Maryland 3-1 in seven innings of baseball.
Michael Hernandez hit his third home run this season, which drove in two runs in the second inning. The Bears put their third run on the scoreboard in the fifth inning after outfielder Tike Redman doubled, driving in Michael Sandoval for the run.
Travis Garica hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning, but the Blue Crabs were stopped when Keith Foulke took to the mound in the seventh. He struck out two, and picked up his ninth save of the season. Oneli Perez pitched an impressive five innings with eight strikeouts, which brings his record to 4-3.
The Bears face the Blue Crabs for the final game of the series on Sunday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears welcome Yankees legend Joe Pepitone to greet fans and throw out the first pitch as part of the Legends Sunday series at The Den.
