Pats Extend Winning Streak to Five thumbnail

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-3 at TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night.

Somerset took the lead in the bottom of the second inning after a solo homerun by designated hitter Jeff Nettles (2).  Catcher Jason Belcher walked, third baseman Teuris Olivares singled, and left fielder Elliott Ayala reached on an error to load the bases.  Shortstop Anthony Granato then walked to score Belcher, right fielder Mike Rodriguez hit into a fielder’s choice to score Olivares, and first baseman Josh Pressley (6) hit a three run homerun to make the score 6-0.

Lancaster scored a run in the top of the fourth inning after center fielder Michael Woods singled and scored on an RBI double by designated hitter L.J. Biernbaum.

The Patriots answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when center fielder Sean Smith (2) hit an inside the park homerun to make the score 7-1.

Somerset added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Second baseman Matt Hagen walked and scored when Ayala singled to left field for an 8-1 lead.

The Barnstormers scored two in the top of the seventh inning after Woods singled and third baseman Aaron Herr (2) hit a homerun to cut the lead to 8-3.

The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Ayala was hit by a pitch and scored when Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the 9-3 final.

Patriots starting pitcher Jim Magrane (5-0) picked up the win after allowing three earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts in eight innings pitched.  Barnstormers starter Juan Ovalles (1-3) got the loss after allowing six runs, one earned, on four hits in two innings pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game on Wednesday, June 3rd against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
