Bears Take Sharks, 7-2
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on June 3, 2009
Camden, NJ – The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Newark Bears 7-2 tonight, after an exceptional performance by Newark starting pitcher Bobby Brownlie, who saw his record improve to 3-2. Brownlie pitched 7 outstanding innings, allowing only 3 hits, and 1 run. Riversharks’ starter Josh Brey (0-1) was charged with the loss after throwing 5 innings, and giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. With the loss, the Riversharks’ record drops to 19-18, while Newark’s improves to 20-17.
The Bears drew first blood in the top of the 4th inning, when catcher Salomon Manriquez hit a ground rule double to center. Brey then surrendered a walk to first basemen Rob Mackowiak. After a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Michael Hernandez, second basemen Anthony Manuel stepped to the plate and laced a two out, two-run single to center, scoring both Manriquez and Mackowiak.
The Riversharks were able to get on the scoreboard when right fielder Chris Walker led off the bottom of the inning with a seeing-eye single to right field. Walker found himself at third base after he stole second, and advanced to third on second basemen Manuel’s fielding error. Then, first basemen Jon Knott hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Walker to cut the lead to 2-1.
Newark answered swiftly, when both Manriquez and Mackowiak were given free passes to first base by Brey. In almost a mirror image of the 4th inning, Manriquez and Mackowiak were once again moved to scoring position courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Hernandez. This time, third basemen Michael Sandoval hit a deep fly ball to left, scoring Manriquez on the sacrifice fly.
The visitor’s added to their lead during the 7th inning, when shortstop Jansy Infante belted a leadoff triple to right, and eventually came around to score when Manriquez ripped a liner to left, upping the ante to 4-1. But there would be no hibernating for these Bears tonight, as Hernandez crushed Riversharks’ reliever Anthony Capella’s first pitch of the 8th inning into deep left field, extending Newark’s lead to 5-1. After Capella walked the bases loaded, he then hit pinch hitter Tike Redman, giving Sandoval a ticket to home. The Bears would add one more run, when a pitch got away from catcher Jason Jacobs, giving the visitors a commanding 7-1 lead.
Despite adding a run in the bottom of the 8th inning, courtesy of an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Jeffrey Vincent, the Riversharks were unable to get their fins moving, and were retired in order by Newark pitcher Cory Willey to end the 9th.
The Riversharks and Bears will conclude their three game series tomorrow, with a special day game, starting at 11:05 am. Right-handed pitcher Brian Lawrence (3-3, 4.01 ERA) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and he will be opposed by right-handed pitcher Shawn Chacon (2-1, 4.38 ERA) from Newark. Limited seating is still available for tomorrow’s game. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
