Patriots Hang On For 11-9 Win

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 11-9 at TD Bank Ballpark on Monday night.
The Barnstormers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after shortstop Lloyd Turner singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by center fielder Michael Woods.
The Patriots answered in the bottom of the first inning after right fielder Mike Rodriguez reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and second baseman Matt Hagen singled to drive him home. Catcher Travis Anderson then singled to left center to score Hagen and make the score 2-1.
Somerset broke the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Jason Belcher doubled, Anderson was hit by a pitch, and third baseman Teuris Olivares doubled to plate Belcher. Left fielder Elliott Ayala then singled to score Olivares and shortstop Anthony Granato followed with a three run homerun (4) to make the score 7-1. First baseman Josh Pressley then reached on a bunt single, Hagen singled, and Belcher doubled to score Pressley. Anderson capped off the rally by hitting a three run homerun (2) to left field to make the score 11-1.
The Barnstormers added a run in the top of the fifth inning. Left fielder Michael Campbell doubled and first baseman Bryan Sabatella singled to make the score 11-2.
Lancaster cut the lead in the top of the sixth inning after designated hitter L.J. Biernbaum reached on an error, catcher Gerard Haran doubled, and right fielder Ryan Mulhern singled up the middle to score Biernbaum and Haran. Sabatella followed with a three run homerun (1) to center to make the score 11-7.
The Barnstormers made it an 11-9 game in the top of the eighth inning. Turner reached on a fielder’s choice, second baseman Danny Bravo singled, and Woods doubled to score Turner. Biernbaum then grounded out to score Bravo.
Patriots starting pitcher Josh Miller (5-2) picked up the win, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Barnstormers starting pitcher Jason Scobie (1-2) got the loss after surrendering 11 earned runs on 13 hits in four innings pitched. Patriots closer Travis Minix (10) got the save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning to close out the victory.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game on Tuesday, June 2nd against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
