Camden Comes Back and Wins 8-3 thumbnail

Camden, NJ – The Camden Riversharks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 8-3 in comeback fashion this afternoon, after an explosive 7th inning from the home team. Chris Shaver (1-1) notched his first win of the season after relieving Dewon Brazelton, who allowed 3 runs over 5 innings. The loss was charged to Barnstormers’ reliever Ross Peeples (1-2) who came in to relieve starter Ben Fritz who allowed just 3 hits and 1 run over 6 innings. With the win, the Riversharks climb 1 game above .500 at 18-17. Meanwhile, Lancaster dropped to 17-18 on the season.

The Barnstormers jumped out to an early lead, as leadoff hitter Lloyd Turner started the game with a single to right field. He then stole second base, and scored when former Rivershark L.J. Biernbaum singled to left field. The next batter was Aaron Herr, who crushed a double to left, driving in Biernbaum, and giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Riversharks cut into Lancaster’s lead in the fourth inning. Designated hitter Brett Bonvechio doubled down the left field line, and then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Camden’s Brian Burgamy then hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Bonvechio, and made the score 2-1 in favor of the Barnstormers.

In the fifth inning, it was once again the duo of Turner and Biernbaum that clicked for the Barnstormers, and added to their lead. Turner drew a four-pitch walk, and then picked up his second steal of the game as he made it safely to second base. Biernbaum then stepped to the plate and doubled to right field, driving home Turner for a second time in the game and giving Lancaster a 3-1 lead.

After a strong 6 innings by Barnstormers’ starter Ben Fritz, Reliever Ross Peeples entered the game to hold down the 3-1 lead. Peeples struggled to find the strike-zone and found himself with the bases loaded after a one out single by left fielder Wayne Lydon. Peeples’ struggles continued as he walked two consecutive batters allowing the Riversharks to tie the score at 3-3. Reliver Joe D’Alessandro, a South Jersey native, then entered the game, but became rattled quickly after newly acquired first basemen Jon Knott hit a double to deep center, plating both Chris Walker and Lydon to untie the score and give the Riversharks a 5-3 lead. But the scoring did not stop there, as Bonvechio stepped to the plate and drove a ball into right field, scoring right fielder Val Majewski, and giving the Sharks’ a 3-run lead. The rally continued as Burgamy added his 2nd and 3rd RBI of the day on a triple to right field, scoring both Knott and Bonvechio to complete the 7-run inning.

With the score 8-3 in the 9th inning, Riversharks’ Reliever Byron Batson made his first appearance with the club, and retired all three batters in order to give the Riversharks an impressive come from behind victory.

The Riversharks will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:05pm, as they welcome the Newark Bears to Campbell’s Field for a three game series. Limited seating is still available for tomorrow’s game. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
