Lancaster Storms Camden, 9-6

Camden, NJ – The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers by a final margin of 9-6 tonight. Lancasters Juan Ovalles (1-2) picked up the win despite only pitching for 2 innings in a game where Lancaster used 6 pitchers. Ovalles gave up two runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. Meanwhile, Camden’s Brian Lawrence (3-3) was charged with the loss, as he allowed nine runs on thirteen hits in seven innings. With the loss, the Riversharks saw their season record fall to 16-17, while Lancaster improved to 17-16.

The Riversharks got on the board early with a 2 out single by Vito Chiaravolloti in the bottom of the 1st inning, scoring Chris Walker from third. However, Lancaster stormed back in the top of the 4th inning with 5 runs, including a 3-run homer by Jed Morris, his 4th of the year. The inning started with a leadoff double by Lancaster shortstop Lloyd Turner who eventually scored on a single by Michel Woods that went through second baseman Brian Finegan’s glove. The Riversharks had an opportunity to turn an inning ending double play on a ground ball up the middle by former Riversharks L.J. Biernbaum, but the ball hit second base and bounced into the outfield, scoring Woods.

The Riversharks responded quickly, though, scoring 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 5-3. The first 3 batters for the Riversharks reached base, and a Chris Walker’s single to right field scored Brian Burgamy and Jason Jacobs. However, the Barnstormers continued to put runs on the board in the top of the 5th inning, scoring 2 more times, bumping up the score to 7-3. A leadoff single by Bryan Sabatella, followed by an infield single by Lloyd Turner put 2 men on for Lancaster with no outs. Some good fundamental baseball followed from the Barnstormers. A sacrifice bunt by David Housel moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd, and a sacrifice fly by Michael Woods scored Sabatella and pushed Turner over to 3rd. A line drive single to right field by Biernbaum scored Turner.

The Riversharks offense continued to keep the pressure up on the Lancaster pitching by scoring 3 more runs in the bottom of the 5th to cut the deficit to 7-6. Some timely 2 out hitting by Kyle Haines with the bases loaded scored Chiaravolloti and Burgamy, and a double to deep left field by Finegan scored Jacobs. But in the top of the 8th, the Barnstormers were able to add a couple insurance runs to push the score to 9-6, and didn’t look back from there. Camden’s starting pitcher Brian Lawrence was still pitching into the 8th inning, but was pulled after giving up a walk and 2 singles, including one by Danny Bravo that scored the first run of the inning. Right-handed reliever Felix Hernandez (0-0, 2.57) attempted to quash the impending threat from Lancaster, but threw 2 wild pitches that allowed Biernbaum to score.

The Riversharks went scoreless from the 6th inning on, and, in the bottom of the 9th, Lancaster brought in closer Ryan Cullen to finish off the game. Despite allowing 2 hits, Cullen earned his 5th save of the season and Lancaster won the game by a final score of 9-6, extending their win streak to 7 games.

The Riversharks and the Barnstormers will play the second game of their three game series tomorrow at 5:35 pm at Campbell’s Field. The matchup will feature, for Camden, right-handed pitcher Nate Bump (4-2, 2.41), who is looking to rebound from just his second loss on the season.
