Ducks Get Swept by Crabs
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 29, 2009
Central Islip, N.Y. – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 6-1 on Thursday night at Citibank Park.
Ducks’ southpaw Randy Leek and the Blue Crabs’ John Halama kept the scoreboard blank through the first four innings. Leek (1-5) finished his night allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and a pair of strikeouts in six innings of work. Halama (7-0) recorded his third complete game of the season, yielding one earned run on seven hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
The Blue Crabs were the first to crack the scoreboard on a Chuck Jeroloman RBI single to left field in a three-hit fifth inning. Southern Maryland got three straight hits to start the sixth, including a pair of doubles, to plate a run. Two sacrifice flies off the bats of Travis Garcia and Jeremy Owens saw two more runs cross and it was 4-0.
Long Island got a run back in the home half inning as Preston Wilson drew a two-out walk and came around to score on a Victor Rodriguez double that rolled all the way to the right field fence.
Southern Maryland put two runners on to start the eighth and Owens came up with his second RBI of the game with a single to left to make it 5-1.
Ducks’ reliever Ron Flores tossed two innings, allowing one run on two hits, with a walk and a strikeout. Closer Bill Simas entered in the ninth inning and despite a run scoring off an error, he surrendered just one hit and struck out two.
