Revs Sweep Historic Doubleheader
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 26, 2009
GAME ONE RECAP:
Colin Roberson ripped a pinch-hit two-run single up the middle to tie the game in the ninth, and Danny Sandoval followed with his second walk-off single, as the York Revolution pulled out a thrilling 3-2 ninth inning comeback to win game one of Monday’s Memorial Day doubleheader in front of 3,683 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York.
Bridgeport starter Gary Knotts had tied the Revolution hitters in knots through eight shutout innings, scattering just four hits.
Revs spot starter Bob Zimmermann was tremendous as well, allowing only three hits in five outstanding innings. He allowed two runs, but only one earned run, and gave the Revolution all they could have asked for from a guy who had not made a start since 2003.
Bridgeport scored the game’s first run in the third inning on a throwing error with two outs, and Brandon Sing homered on the first pitch of the fourth to give Bridgeport a 2-0 lead, but that was all of the scoring until the ninth.
David Shafer made his Revs debut with a scoreless sixth, Josh Sharpless worked the seventh and eighth, and Steve Andrade set the side down in order in the ninth to keep the game within reach.
Matt Padgett got the inning started with a huge at-bat, fouling off pitch after pitch after falling behind in the count, and eventually ripped a leadoff single into center. Matt Esquivel did likewise with one out, fouling off pitches and forcing a walk to put two aboard.
Bluefish manager Tommy John then called on 6′8 submarine righty Casey Hoorelbeke in relief, but he walked Kennard Jones to load the bases. Hoorelbeke rebounded with a strikeout for the second out, but Roberson, who did not have a hit in his previous 18 at-bats, stepped in as the pinch-hitter and tied the game with the single up the middle. Sandoval then followed with his heroics, and as Jones touched home with his hand in the air, 24 other gold shirts came racing at him, and then chased Sandoval into right field as the wild celebration began.
It was the Revs’ second walk-off win of the season, and second comeback victory, their first when trailing after six innings. For Sandoval, he now owns both walk-off hits, as well as the game-winning run in the Revs’ other last at-bat victory (an 11-inning win at Camden last Wednesday).
Game two of the doubleheader is set for 6 p.m. Monday night against the Camden Riversharks, with Dave Gassner facing Dewon Brazelton on the mound. Hatfield Quality Meats will again provide $1 hot dogs as part of Rev-o-nomics, and Fireworks will follow the action to cap the holiday classic.
GAME TWO RECAP:
The York Revolution had just one comeback win all season entering the day, but came-from-behind in two Memorial Day thrillers, sweeping a day-night doubleheader at Sovereign Bank Stadium. After their walk-off win against Bridgeport in the early game, the Revs tied Camden in the sixth, and plated four in the eighth to win the nightcap, 5-1, in front of 3,505 on a fireworks night.
York fell behind early as Chris Walker led off the game with a single, moved to second on a balk, and scored on Junior Spivey’s RBI hit. That first inning run was the only run that Dave Gassner would allow all night. The left-hander was outstanding, earning his first win (1-4), and allowing just five hits and one walk over eight brilliant innings, while striking out five. He once retired nine straight, and also set down each of the final seven hitters he faced.
Dewon Brazelton was also sharp for Camden. He took a shutout into the sixth, but Keoni DeRenne doubled with one out, and Matt Padgett slapped the game-tying RBI single up the middle to even things at 1-1.
The Revs then exploded for four runs in the eighth inning against Camden’s bullpen, matching their largest inning of the season. Matt Esquivel gave York the lead with an RBI single to left. Jeff Eure then ripped another RBI hit into left, past the drawn-in infield for insurance. Josh Johnson capped the scoring with a two-run double high off the Arch Nemesis in left, narrowly missing a grand slam. York used six hits in the inning to score the four runs, a season-high for hits in an inning, after managing only five all game prior to that point.
Travis Phelps worked a scoreless ninth to finish it off.
The Revs now have their first winning streak of the season, and improve to 9-20. Camden falls to 15-15.
It was York’s fifth doubleheader sweep all-time, fourth at home, and third in four tries in day-night doubleheaders.
The Revs will continue the series on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against the Riversharks, with Dan Foli taking the mound against Tom Davey. Rev-o-nomics will continue with $1 Hot Dogs presented by Hatfield Quality Meats. It is also the third night that young fans can redeem their tickets from Rev Up Reading!
