By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 25, 2009
Newark, NJ – The York Revolution lost to the Newark Bears in the rubber game of their series by an 8-5 final on Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Revs conclude their road trip with a 3-4 mark, and will begin a four-game, three-day homestand with Monday’s historic day-night doubleheader against Bridgeport at noon, and Camden at 6 p.m. at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
Matt Padgett drilled a solo homerun to right-center in the top of the first, spotting the Revs a first inning run for the third straight game.
In a trend that would continue throughout the day, however, the Bears had an answer. Four times during the course of the game, the Revs scored in the top half of an inning, only to watch Newark counter in the bottom half. The Bears tied it at 1-1 on Jay Gibbons’ RBI double to right in the bottom of the first inning.
The Revs then went back in front in the second on a two-out RBI single to left by Jeff Eure, giving the Revs a 2-1 advantage.
Newark responded with two in the bottom half, as Tike Redman lined a sac fly to right tying the game, and Ramon Nivar drove in the go-ahead run on an infield single.
The Revs tied it at 3-3 in the fifth inning as Padgett ripped an RBI double to the gap in right-center. He finished the day 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, and two RBI.
Newark struck right back though in the bottom of the fifth, as Carl Everett lined a solo homerun inside the right field foul pole, putting the Bears back in front at 4-3. Alberto Castillo then homered to left field in the sixth, increasing the lead to 5-3.
Tom Collaro’s two-out, two-run single to left field tied the game in the seventh, but the Bears scored the game’s final three to finish off the game.
Salomon Manriquez doubled to right-center in the seventh giving Newark a 6-5 lead. Michael Hernandez made it 7-5 in the eighth on another double to right-center, and he scored the game’s final run on a double play grounder.
Aaron Fultz (1-0) earned the win in relief for Newark, recording the final out of the seventh before the Bears took the lead for good.
Travis Phelps (0-1) suffered the loss for York.
Keith Foulke recorded his eighth save with a scoreless ninth.
Monday’s doubleheader at Sovereign Bank Stadium kicks off three days of Rev-o-nomics, with $1 hot dogs presented by Hatfield Quality Meats. The noon game against Bridgeport is a Monkey Magic Monday, while postgame fireworks will follow the 6 p.m. game. Bob Zimmermann faces Bridgeport’s Gary Knotts in the opener, while Dave Gassner will take on Camden’s Dewon Brazelton in the nightcap.
