Crabs Beat Sharks, 4-2
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 25, 2009
Camden, NJ – The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs by a final margin of 4-2 today. Southern Maryland’s Kenny Rayborn (3-0) picked up the win after pitching seven dominant innings, giving up only one run, while striking out five. Meanwhile, Camden’s Nate Bump (4-2) was charged with loss, as he allowed four runs on twelve hits in seven innings. With the loss, the Riversharks saw their season record fall to 15-14, while Southern Maryland improved to 18-11.
Riversharks starter Nate Bump appeared to be sailing smoothly through the first inning, but ran into some trouble with two outs. After retiring the first two batters faced, he gave up three consecutive singles to Jermy Acey, Eric Crozier, and Travis Garcia. Garcia’s base hit drove in Acey, and gave the Blue Crabs an early 1-0 lead.
Southern Maryland doubled their lead in the second inning. Chuck Jeroloman singled to left field and then advanced to third when Mike Just doubled. Two batters later, James Shanks stepped to the plate and hit an RBI single that scored Jeroloman. Just also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate, thanks to a strong throw from Camden left fielder Wayne Lydon.
Sloppy defense cost the Riversharks an additional run in the fourth inning. Lance Burkhart’s routine ground ball to third base was misplayed by Brian Burgamy, whose overthrow allowed Burkhart to advance to second. A sacrifice fly by Just later in the inning scored Burkhart, and made the score 3-1.
The Sharks pulled back a run in the 5th inning. Right fielder Val Majewski leadoff the inning with a solo homerun to right field, cutting Camden’s deficit to two runs. The homerun was Majewski’s third of the year. The Blue Crabs were quick to restore their lead to 3, when first basemen Eric Cozier laced a two-out double to left field. His double was followed up by Garcia, who doubled to right, scoring Cozier.
After a bases loaded walk by Blue Crab pitcher Matt Schweitzer, Southern Maryland called out closer Jim Ed Warden. He struck out Riversharks’ designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti to end the 8th, and then cut through Camden’s lineup in the 9th inning, recording his 8th save of the season.
Next up, the Riversharks will be on the road for a three game series with the York Revolution starting tomorrow. The team will then return home to Campbell’s Field on Friday, May 29th, to take on the Lancaster Barnstormers at 7:05 pm. Limited seating is still available.
