Sharks and Crabs Split Doubleheader thumbnail

CAMDEN, NJ – The Camden Riversharks and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs split a double header at Campbell’s Field today. Southern Maryland won the first game by a final score of 9-4. Lefty John Halama (6-0) picked up the win for the Blue Crabs as he allowed four runs on eleven hits in the seven inning game. Camden’s Anthony Capella (1-1) was charged with the loss as he allowed three runs in only one inning of work.

The Riversharks won the second game of the day by a final score of 4-2. Starter Brian Lawrence (3-2) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed only 2 earned runs on seven hits. Southern Maryland’s Matt Desalvo (0-1) was charged with the loss in his first appearance with the team. He allowed four runs and five hits in five innings pitched.  Camden’s Tracy Thorpe picked up his fourth save of the season.

By splitting the double header, Camden’s season record moved to 15-13, while Southern Maryland’s changed to 17-11. The Riversharks and Blue Crabs will wrap up their four game series tomorrow at 1:05 pm. Right handed pitcher Nate Bump (4-1, 2.12) will be on the mound for the Riversharks, and he will be opposed by righty Kenny Rayborn (2-0, 1.52) for Southern Maryland. Limited seating is still available. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.

Game 1 Recap
The Blue Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the 2nd inning when center fielder Jeremy Owens crushed a fastball from Josh Brey over the center field wall, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The long ball was his third homerun of the season.

The Riversharks answered right back in the bottom of the inning and tied the game at 1-1. With one out and the bases loaded, right fielder Jeffrey Vincent flied out to right field, scoring Vito Chiarvolloti and picking up his fifth RBI of the year.

Two innings later, Southern Maryland starter John Halama struggled to find the strike zone, and the Riversharks took the lead. Leadoff hitter Chris Walker started things off with a base hit, and then advanced to third when Halama walked two batters later in the inning.  With the bases loaded, second baseman Brian Finegan singled to left field, driving in two runs, and giving Camden a 3-1 lead.

In the 4th inning, the Sharks turned things over to reliever Anthony Capella, who could not manage to hold the lead. He gave up a single to Travis Garcia, and then hit center fielder Jeremy Owens. With two runners aboard, Southern Maryland’s Chuck Jeroloman crushed a towering fly ball over the left field wall, and the Blue Crabs took the lead.

The Sharks once again tied the game in the fifth inning, as shortstop Junior Spivey hit his team leading fourth homerun of the season. His solo shot knotted the game at 4-4.

The seesaw ride continued in the 6th inning. With a runner in scoring position, Blue Crabs’ second baseman Mike Just hit an RBI single to center field, once again giving the visitors a one run lead. The RBI was Just’s ninth of the season.

Southern Maryland put the game away in the 7th inning, as they sent eight batters to the plate and tacked on four additional runs. A bases clearing triple by Eric Crozier drove in two runs, and he himself scored later in the inning. Lance Burkhart then drove in the final run of the game with an RBI single to left field, giving the Blue Crabs a 9-4 lead that they would not relinquish.

John Halama pitched all seven innings of the abridged game for Southern Maryland, and picked up his sixth win of the season. Meanwhile, Camden’s Anthony Capella was charged with the loss as he allowed three runs in only one inning of work.

Game 2 Recap
Things got off to a rocky start for the Riversharks in game two of the double header. Brian Lawrence’s first pitch of the game was laced into center field for a leadoff triple by Southern Maryland’s Richard Giannotti. The next batter was designated hitter James Shanks, who drove home Giannotti with an RBI groundout to second base, and gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Camden answered right back in the bottom of the first, courtesy of some poor defense by the Blue Crabs. Wayne Lydon drew a leadoff walk, and then advanced to second base on a throwing error by catcher Octavio Martinez. Martinez then committed his second error of the inning when he tried to throw out Lydon’s attempt to steal third. The ball sailed into left field, allowing Lydon to score and tying the game at 1-1.

The Sharks extended their lead in the 3rd inning, as Brian Finegan leadoff by getting hit by a pitch. Three batters later, center fielder Chris Walker singled up the middle and drove Finegan home, giving the home team a one run lead.

Camden tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, Finegan made it to first with an infield single, and then scored when Kyle Haines tripled down the left field line. Then next batter was Lydon, who notched a base hit that scored Haines, and gave the Sharks a 4-1 lead.

Southern Maryland pulled one run back in the sixth.  With the bases loaded, Martinez atoned for his earlier miscues as he hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Jeremy Owens and making the score 4-2 in favor of Camden.

With a two run lead in the final inning, the Sharks put the ball in the hands of closer Tracy Thorpe. Thrope and allowed only one base runner and retired the side without giving up any runs, and the Riversharks won the game with a final score of 4-2.
