Pats Win Thrid in Row With 7-2 Win Over Ducks

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 7-2 in front of 6,882 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night.
Somerset took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Designated hitter Sean Smith walked, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by first baseman Josh Pressley. Catcher Jason Belcher then drove home Pressley with an RBI single.
Long Island cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the top of the second inning. Left fielder Estee Harris doubled and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Gabe Suarez.
The Patriots extended the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Shortstop Anthony Granato walked, Smith was hit by a pitch, and center fielder Mike Rodriguez singled to load the bases. Pressley drew a bases loaded walk to plate Granato and Smith scored when third baseman Jeff Nettles grounded into a triple play for a 4-1 lead.
The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by left fielder Jon Nelson (3) to make the score 5-1.
Somerset continued to roll with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-1 advantage. Nettles and right fielder Matt Hagen each singled and Belcher and Nelson followed with back-to-back RBI singles.
The Ducks cut the lead to 7-2 after designated hitter Raul Gonzalez singled and scored on an RBI single by Johnny Hernandez.
Patriots starter Kip Bouknight (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings pitched. Ducks starter Randy Leek (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:35 pm game on Sunday afternoon against the Long Island Ducks. The game includes Youth Baseball Bats for the first 1,000 kids and SpongeBob Day.
