Thurman All Aces In Newark
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 23, 2009
Newark, NJ – Corey Thurman fired six shutout innings, and Tom Collaro and Ryan Goleski each mashed two-run homers as the York Revolution grabbed a victory in their series opener against the Newark Bears at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Friday night. The Revs are now 3-2 on their week-long road trip.
The game could not have started better for the Revs who had an early three-run cushion after half an inning. Keoni DeRenne fell behind 0-2 to start the game but cracked a double to right, and scored on Matt Padgett’s RBI single up the middle. Collaro then slammed his two-run homer to left-center against Bears starter Bobby Brownlie.
The Revs added to their lead with back-to-back doubles in the sixth from Ryan Goleski, and Matt Rogelstad who picked up an RBI in his Revs debut. Josh Johnson was then hit by a pitch, and later scored on Danny Sandoval’s RBI fielder’s choice, as the lead expanded to 5-0.
Thurman (1-2) was brilliant in earning his first win of the season. He allowed just three hits, walked two, and struck out five. The right-hander did not allow a hit through his first 3.1 innings, and faced the minimum through five.
He had some help from catcher Josh Johnson who threw out two baserunners attempting to steal second base, and three double plays turned behind him (two ground balls, one strikeout double play).
The Revs tacked on another run in the seventh. Collaro and Matt Esquivel singled to lead off the inning, landing runners at the corners. Cory Willey came on to replace Brownlie, and Goleski greeted him with an RBI ground out to short, scoring Collaro to make it 6-0. Esquivel was running on the pitch, avoiding the twin killing.
Newark plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth, making things nerve wracking for the Revs. Reliever Jason Kershner slipped on a ground ball and threw wide of first, allowing the first run to score on the error. Tike Redman then singled to left driving in another run, and after an infield hit by Ramon Nivar, Charlton Jimerson singled up the middle, cutting it to 6-3, and bringing Carl Everett to the plate as the tying run. Kershner induced a fly ball to center field, however, keeping the lead in tact.
Goleski then lined his first homerun of the season over the Revs bullpen in the ninth, providing the final margin of 8-3. It scored Esquivel, who had ripped his second hit of the game with two outs.
Steve Andrade worked a scoreless ninth.
