Patriots Top Ducks, 7-1

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 7-1 in front of 6,160 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday night.
Somerset took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Sean Smith singled, right fielder Mike Rodriguez drew a walk, and third baseman Jeff Nettles followed with an RBI groundout to plate Smith. Designated hitter Matt Hagen then doubled home Rodriguez and Hagen scored on an RBI single by second baseman Teuris Olivares.
The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the third inning. First baseman Josh Pressley walked and scored on an RBI double by Hagen for a 4-0 lead.
Somerset extended the lead on a solo home run by Olivares (3) in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 5-0.
The Patriots increased their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning after shortstop Anthony Granato walked and scored on an error by left fielder Estee Harris.
Long Island scored in the top of the eighth inning after first baseman Johnny Hernandez singled and later scored on an RBI single by catcher John Pachot.
Somerset added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning after Olivares walked and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Smith.
Patriots starting pitcher Jim Magrane (3-0) picked up the win after surrendering only four hits and an earned run in 7.2 innings pitched. Ducks starter Jake Dittler (0-1) got the loss after giving up five earned runs on six hits in five innings pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game on Saturday night against the Long Island Ducks. Bridgewater, NJ – The Newark Bears shut out the Somerset Patriots 4-0 before 5,484 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
