Ducks Waddle Off Wild One
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 22, 2009
Central Islip, N.Y. - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 14-13 in 10 innings on Thursday at Citibank Park.
The Ducks and Bears traded runs in the third as Ramon Nivar hit his second home run in as many nights to put Newark up a run. The Ducks came right back with a run in the home half as Juan Francia led off the frame with a triple and came around to score on Ray Navarrete’s RBI groundout.
In the fourth, the Bears would bat around against Ducks’ starter Troy Cate and reliever Mike Hrynio. Four hits and two walks led to four runs and the Bears took a 5-1 lead. Cate left in the middle of the inning with a groin injury and is listed as day-to-day. The resilient Ducks struck back again off Bears’ starter Ryan Bukvich in the next half inning. Navarrete’s two-run double and Preston Wilson’s majestic two-run dinger over the right-center field wall highlighted a six-run fifth to grab the lead back for the Flock at 7-5.
A solo shot by Bears’ second baseman Andres Perez cut the lead to one in top of the sixth, but the Ducks answered with four more in the bottom of the inning. For the second straight frame, the Flock sent 10 men to the plate, with Lew Ford supplying the power on a three-run homer deep to center field to give Long Island a 12-6 lead. However, Dan Miceli and Billy Simas couldn’t hold it as the Bears struck for seven runs in the top of the eighth to take a one run advantage. With the Ducks down by a run entering the bottom of the ninth, Navarrete played the role of hero, with a leadoff homer to left to send it to extra innings.
Simas retired the first two batters he faced in the first extra frame with two strikeouts. Despite a two-out double, he retired the side without any damage. The Ducks got revenge in the 10th as John Pachot, who came in to play catcher one inning earlier, singled home Gabe Suarez to send the Flock faithful home happy with a thrilling 14-13 win. The Ducks set season highs in runs (14) and hits (22) and finished the homestand with three hard fought wins.
The Ducks will now hit the road to begin a quick three-game series against the Somerset Patriots. Game time for Friday is slated for 7:05 p.m at TD Bank Ballpark. Fans can tune into all the action live on WNYG 1440 AM, or via streaming webcast at www.liducks.com, with Chris King calling the play-by-play. The club returns home on Tuesday, May 26, to host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Citibank Park. First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m., and the ballpark gates open at 5:35 p.m. Tickets to the game and all upcoming Ducks home games are available at the Citibank Park Box Office, by calling (631) 940-TIXX, or by logging onto www.liducks.com and clicking on the tickets icon at the top of the page.
