York Gets Rare Win

York Gets Rare Win thumbnail

Camden, NJ  – The Camden Riversharks lost the York Revolution 7-6 tonight, in a thrilling 11 inning game that saw the Sharks come back from three deficits throughout the course of the night. York’s Travis Hughes picked up his first win of the season, despite giving up two unearned runs in two innings pitched. Camden’s Tracy Thorpe (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he gave up the game winning run in the final frame. The Revolution’s Travis Phelps picked up his second save of the season.

The Revolution jumped out to an early lead in this contest, as they took a 1-0 nothing lead in the first inning. Leadoff batter Keoni DeRenne drew a walk, and then scored, courtesy of back to back singles by Tom Collaro and Jason Aspito. York had an opportunity to build upon their early advantage, but left the bases loaded as Riversharks starter Dewon Brazelton settled into a groove and struck out the final two batters of the inning.

The Sharks answered right back in the bottom of the first inning, and quickly tied the game at 1-1. Junior Spivey reached base on a fielder’s choice, and then came around to score when designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti laced a double to center field.

The scoring continued for York in the second inning, and they once again took the lead. Danny Sandoval reached first with a base hit, and the next batter was DeRenne who followed suit. Two batters later, Collaro stepped to the plate and recorded his second single of the game, driving home Sandoval and making the score 2-1.

The Revolution added to their lead in the fifth, as the inning got off to an auspicious start for the visitors. Kennard Jones’ looping hit to the outfield got lost in the lights, and he found his way to second base. The next batter was Collaro, who doubled to right field, driving home Jones. Two batters later, Jeff Eure hit an RBI single to center field, and gave York a three run lead.

Camden rallied in the 6th inning, as catcher Jason Jacobs picked up his third hit of the night, which could not have come at a better time. With two runners on base, Jacobs crushed Revolution pitcher Dave Gassner’s pitch to deep left field for a three run homerun. Jacobs’ first long ball of the season tied the game at 4-4.

The Revolution’s offense continued to click however, and broke the tie score the following inning. Collaro led off the 7th with a single to right field, and then advanced to second base off of a wild pitch by Riversharks reliever Josh Brey. He then scored when Aspito picked up his second hit of the night, an RBI double that gave York the lead again. The road team tacked on one more run in the inning, courtesy on an RBI single by Jeff Eure that made the score 6-4.

With a two run lead, the Revolution brought in closer Travis Hughes to close out the game, but the Riversharks refused to go down without a fight. With one out and runners at the corners, Wayne Lydon hit a ground ball that deflected off of Hughes and went directly to second baseman Keoni DeRenne. DeRenne’s throw over to first base was not fielded cleanly, and one run came around to score for the Sharks. The next batter was Junior Spivey, who hit an RBI single to left field, and tied the game up at 6-6, forcing extra innings.

Despite Camden’s late rally, the York was relentless, and answered back in the 11th. Sandoval leadoff the inning with a stand up double, and advanced to third on a well executed bunt by DeRenne. The Sharks then opted to intentionally walk Jones, and force a bases loaded situation.  The gamble ultimately backfired, as Camden reliever Tracy Thorpe walked the next batter, forcing in the game winning run. The final score of the game was 7-6 in favor of York, in 11 innings played.

The Riversharks and Revolution will wrap up their four game series tomorrow, at a special 11:05 am start time. Right handed pitcher Tom Davey (2-0, 1.00) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and he will be opposed by Dan Foli (0-2, 11.17) for York. Limited seating is still available.
