Great Pitching Leads to Riversharks Win thumbnail

CAMDEN, NJ -The Camden Riversharks defeated the York Revolution 5-1 today, thanks to a strong pitching performance by starter Tom Davey. Davey (3-0) pitched seven strong innings, and allowed only one run on three hits, while striking out eight batters.  Meanwhile, York’s Dan Foli (0-4) was charged with the loss, as he allowed four earned runs and eleven hits in 6.1 innings pitched.

The Sharks broke the scoreless tie in the third inning by playing small ball and utilizing their speed on the base paths. Catcher Frederick Torres leadoff the inning with a single to right field, and then advanced to third courtesy of back to back bunt singles by speedsters Wayne Lydon and Chris Walker. With the bases loaded, Camden’s Junior Spivey stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Torres and giving the home team an early one run lead.

York answered right back in the 4th inning. Ryan Goleski drew a one out walk and then made his way to third base when Tom Collaro singled to right field. The next batter Matt Esquivel, who drove home Goleski with a sacrifice fly, knotting the game at 1-1.

Camden regained the lead in the 6th inning, as right fielder Jeff Vincent hit his first homerun of the season to straight away center field. The two run blast gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead that would only grow the following inning. Lydon led off the 7th inning with a single up the middle, and then scored when Walker’s bunt was misplayed the Revolution’s Jeff Eure. Walker also scored in the inning, thanks to an RBI double by designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti, that gave the home team a 5-1 lead.

With a four run lead, Camden put the ball in the hands of closer Tracy Thorpe, who shut out the Revolution in a non-save opportunity. Thorpe allowed only one base runner, and the Riversharks won by a final score of 5-1.

With the win, Camden climbs over the .500 mark and improves its record to 13-12 on the season.  Meanwhile, York’s season tally falls to 6-18 with the loss. The Riversharks will welcome the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to Campbell’s Field for a three game series that will begin tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Limited seating is still available.
