Lancaster vs. So. Maryland Suspended in Ninth
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on May 17, 2009
Lancaster, PA – Crew chief Bob Bainter did everything humanly possible to squeeze a full game out on Saturday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium, but a nearby bolt of lightning and dropped fly ball gave firm indication that it was time to call it a night before a decision was rendered.
The game was suspended in the bottom of the ninth with Southern Maryland leading the Barnstormers, 7-5. Play will resume on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 and will be followed by the regularly scheduled nine inning contest.
Southern Maryland had grabbed a 7-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single by Pat Osborn and subsequent error by L.J. Biernbaum on an already slick outfield lawn. Rain intensified as Lancaster came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, and Blue Crabs closer Jim Ed Warren had trouble with the elements. He walked Lloyd Turner on four pitches. Turner swiped second and Danny Bravo followed with a single to center, adding a second runner. Ryan Mulhern lofted a deep fly to left, scoring Turner, but Mulhern also reached base when James Shanks had the waterlogged ball squirt free from his glove.
Bainter called a halt to play at that moment, and ongoing rains forced suspension of the game. It will be resumed in progress on Sunday afternoon. L.J. Biernbaum will bat with runners at first and second and nobody out when play continues.
