Crabs Crush Ducks, 12-2

By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on April 27, 2009

Crabs Crush Ducks, 12-2 thumbnail

On Sunday, the Blue Crabs pummeled the Long Island Ducks by a 12-2 score, to even their record at 2-2 on the season.  After dropping the first two games of the season-opening series to the Ducks, the Blue Crabs ended the series outscoring Long Island by a 26-21 count for the weekend.  Kenny Rayborn tossed five solid innings to get the win for the Blue Crabs on Sunday, while the offense exploded for 12 hits, including three home runs by Travis Garcia, Eric Crozier and Patrick Osborn.

The Blue Crabs will next be in action Tuesday evening at home at Regency Furniture Stadium against the York Revolution for the first of three games through Thursday.  First pitch is at 7:05 p.m, and the stadium gates will open at 6 p.m.  Scheduled starters are RHP Rick Bauer for York, a former Baltimore Oriole who pitched in the Major Leagues last season with the Cleveland Indians, and RHP Kenny Baugh for Southern Maryland, who will make his first start of the season.

As for Sunday’s game…

Garcia hit a three-run homer in the second, part of a five-run Blue Crabs inning.  Crozier’s bomb was good for two runs in the fourth, and Osborn’s also went for two in the seventh.  The three round-trippers accounted for seven of the 12 Blue Crabs runs.  James Shanks, Chuck Jeroloman and Mike Conroy all chipped in RBI singles, and Lance Burkhart contributed an RBI groundout.  Thanks to three Long Island errors, only six of the 12 runs were earned against the Ducks.

Ducks starter B.J. LaMura was chased after giving up those five second inning runs, and the Ducks used six pitchers total in the rout, including starting third baseman Matt Cavagnaro in the ninth inning, and he ended up striking out the side.  The Blue Crabs used four relievers of their own in addition to Rayborn, and the most impressive performance came from lefty Jason Navarro, who retired all six players he faced in order in the sixth and seventh, after inheriting a bases loaded jam with no outs.  Navarro struck out three of the six.

LaMura, who took the loss, ended up with two hits, five runs (just one earned), with three walks and three strikeouts.  Rayborn scattered seven hits, the run he gave up was not earned, and he walked two and struck out two.

Scoring plays for Long Island included an RBI single my Major League veteran Preston Wilson in the third inning, and an RBI double by Dennis Donovan in the sixth.  When Mike Conroy singled home Jeremy Owens in the second to give the Crabs a 1-0 lead, it marked the first time in four games this season that Southern Maryland was first to score.
