Riversharks Attack Patriots, 9-4

Bridgewater, NJ – The Camden Riversharks defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-4 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
The Riversharks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Michael Abernathy doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti.
Camden added two runs to the lead in the top of the third inning. Catcher Jason Jacobs doubled and scored on an error that allowed center fielder Christopher Walker to reach safely. Walker later scored on an error for a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. First baseman Josh Pressley singled and scored on a two-run home run by second baseman Matt Hagen (1).
Camden answered with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Left fielder Wayne Lydon reached on an error and designated hitter Manny Mejia singled. After Jeffrey Vincent was put in as a pinch runner for Mejia, catcher Frederick Torres drove in Lydon with an RBI single. Vincent came around to score on a fielder’s choice that allowed Walker to reach first safely for a 5-2 lead.
Somerset cut the lead to one run again in the bottom of the seventh inning. Center fielder Sean Smith singled and scored on a two-run home run by designated hitter Noah Hall (1) to make the score 5-4.
The Riversharks put the game out of reach with four unearned runs on two Patriots errors in the top of the ninth inning.
Camden starter Nate Bump (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and five strikeouts in six innings pitched. Patriots starter Brian Adams (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Tracy Thorpe earned his first save of the season, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue with a 1:35 pm game on Sunday, April 26th against the Camden Riversharks at TD Bank Ballpark. The first 1,500 kids in attendance will receive a Youth Jersey courtesy of Raritan Valley & Belle Mead Orthodontics. The game includes Kids Opening Day with an Autograph Session and a chance for kids to Run The Bases after the game. The Patriots will include Autism Awareness Day at the ballpark.
