Pats Open with Celebration

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots opened the 2009 season with a Championship Celebration to recognize the 2008 team. The Championship Celebration took place before the game and started with a video recap of the 2008 season that ended with Travis Anderson’s game-winning and series clinching walk-off home run in Game Four. After the video, the 2008 Patriots coaches, players, and on-field personnel received their championship rings. Patriots first baseman Josh Pressley was presented with a plaque to commemorate his MVP Season. President and General Manager Patrick McVerry was also recognized as the Atlantic League Executive of the Year. The Patriots then raised the 2008 Championship Flag, joining the team’s other three flags from the 2001, 2003, and 2005 seasons.
The Patriots continued the celebration by defeating the Camden Riversharks 4-1 before 6,237 fans at TD Bank Ballpark. The Patriots broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shortstop Anthony Granato walked, center fielder Sean Smith singled, and designated hitter Noah Hall followed with a two-run triple. Third baseman Jeff Nettles then singled home Hall for a 4-1 advantage. The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hall walked, first baseman Josh Pressley walked, and second baseman Matt Hagen singled home Hall for the early lead. Camden tied up the game with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Left fielder Wayne Lydon singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Kyle Haines. Patriots reliever Ryan Basner (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched with a strikeout. Camden reliever Shaun Parker (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on a hit in 0.1 innings pitched. Travis Minix earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning pitched. Patriots starter Jim Magrane pitched 5.2 innings and allowed an earned run on four hits and three strikeouts in a no decision.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue with a 7:05 pm game on Friday, April 24th against the Camden Riversharks at TD Bank Ballpark. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Championship T-Shirt courtesy of Middlesex County College.
