Barnstromers Win Fifth Straight Opening Day
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on April 24, 2009
Lancaster, PA - It’s become an Opening Night tradition.
For the fifth straight year, the Lancaster Barnstormers allowed exactly two runs in their season opener as the host club downed the Newark Bears, 5-2, in front of 8,019 Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Barnstormers have won all five.
Josh Hall worked six strong innings for Lancaster, and L.J. Biernbaum cranked two home runs in the Barnstormers victory.
Newark drew first blood with a two-run homer to right by Ramon Nivar in the top of the second. From there, Hall and a trio of relievers shut down the Bears offense on two hits for the remainder of the night. No other Bear advanced beyond second base.
Lancaster responded immediately to the Nivar blast. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Ryan Bukvich walked the bases loaded. Lloyd Turner grounded a single up the middle, scoring Bryan Sabatella and Adam Shorsher before Amadeo Zazueta was cut down at third.
The score remained tied at 2-2 until Jason Perry opened the bottom of the sixth with a homer to right off Oneli Perez (0-1). Two batters later, Biernbaum connected to right center for a 4-2 lead. Biernbaum also went to right center off Cory Willey in the eighth inning for an insurance run.
Hall (1-0) allowed four hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out seven. Eddie Camacho, Jon Huber and Ryan Cullen each worked a scoreless inning with Cullen earning the save.
NOTES: The crowd of 8,019 was the fourth largest in franchise history…Biernbaum had homered nine times against the Barnstormers in four years with Camden…Seven of those homers came in 2007, tying the record for the most against Lancaster in one season…Lefty Zack Parker will start Friday night’s game against right-hander Bobby Brownlie for the Bears…Game time is 7:00.
