By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on August 25, 2008

WALDORF , MD- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-3 in front of 3,102 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Crabs broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Third baseman Patrick Osborn hit a two out single to left and moved to third on a double down the right field line by designated hitter Clinton Johnston. Second baseman Chris Maples then hit a bloop two run single down the right field line that scored both Osborn and Maples.

The Patriots sent eight men to the plate and rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. Shortstop Teuris Olivares led off with a solo home run (7) to left and then designated hitter Josh Pressley lined a one out single to right. After first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti drew a walk, leftfielder Mike Lockwood ripped an RBI single to center that plated Pressley. Rightfielder Elliott Ayala then lined a two out two run double off the top of the left field wall that drove in both Chiaravalloti and Lockwood.

Somerset added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 5-2 when centerfielder Sean Smith drew a lead off walk and came around to score on a RBI triple into the right field corner by Olivares.

Southern Maryland scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 5-3 when centerfielder Jeremy Owens led off with a double to left, moved to third on a single to left by catcher Adam Shorsher and scored on a double play ball off the bat of shortstop George Sandel.

Patriots’ starter Kip Bouknight (3-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking none in seven innings of work. Blue Crabs’ reliever Brock Till (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits while walking one and striking out none in 0.1 innings pitched.
