By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on August 25, 2008
NEWARK, N.J. – The 2007 Atlantic League champion Newark Bears have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jeff Blitstein. The Bears acquired Blitstein from the St. Paul Saints of the American Association for future considerations.
In six seasons, Blitstein has made 101 appearances, including 81 starts. The 6’2” hurler owns a 40-27 career record with a 3.34 earned run average and has exhibited tremendous control, walking just 123 batters in 592 innings pitched. In his professional career, Blitstein has thrown 12 complete games, 6 six of which were shutouts.
The Burbank, California native was a 39th-round draft pick by the Houston Astros in 1999 but took a four-year break after the 2000 season to attend college. Blitstein came back to professional baseball with the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the Golden League. While in San Diego, he was a teammate of former Bears outfielder Rickey Henderson and led the team to the inaugural league championship with a 10-3 record and 2.93 earned run average.
Blitstein has also made stops with Lincoln of the American Association, Winnipeg of the Northern League, and Laguna and Tijuana of the Mexican League. In 2006, he made a brief appearance in the Atlantic League pitching for the Atlantic City Surf.
The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and just minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
