Fish Walk-Off with Victory Over Bears
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on August 19, 2008
BRIDGEPORT, CT – – On a wild night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard the Newark Bears’ worst enemy turned out to go by the same name. Bridgeport Bluefish outfielder Ryan Bear drilled a walk-off two-run home run in the tenth inning to give his team an 8-7 victory. The ‘Fish improve to 17-19 in the second half with the win.
Bear capped a perfect evening with his walk-off jack, finishing four-for-four with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs. He tied the game in the first inning with a two-run double then gave his team the lead in the third with another two-bagger that scored Jay Caligiuri.
Bridgeport took a 6-4 lead into the ninth but could not hang on against the league’s leading offense. Jose Herrera’s sacrifice fly to left field tied the game at six and ultimately sent the game to extra innings. Atlantic League leading hitter Ramon Castro’s only hit of the night drove in Vic Gutierrez in the tenth to give his team a one-run edge. Shawn Babula (0-2) surrendered the game-winning long ball in the bottom of the inning.
Andy Weimer (1-1) picked up the win in relief despite allowing the go-ahead Newark run to score. Caligiuri (two runs) and Jesse Hoorelbeke (double, run) both recorded two hits for Bridgeport.
Ramon Nivar led the Newark offense with a four-for-five night with two runs scored. Raul Gonzalez also drove in two runs for the Bears.
Bridgeport looks to continue their success against the Bears tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. Mike Connolly (2-1) will square off against Frank Rodriguez (1-1) of Newark.
