Bluefish Walk-off on the Bears

By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 14, 2008

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Bridgeport Bluefish completed a series sweep of the Newark Bears with a 5-4 walk-off victory on Sunday. Bluefish infielder Luis Lopez’s only hit of the day could not have come at a better moment as his tenth inning single drove in Brian Munhall for the game-winning run. The ‘Fish have now won three straight and improve 37-39.

The Bluefish trailed 4-2 heading into the ninth after a two-run top of the inning for Newark. Outfielder Branden Florence capped his great day at the plate with a game tying double that scored Jesse Hoorelbeke and Ryan Bear. It was his third game-tying hit of the afternoon as the 2008 All-Star also knotted the game up 1-1 with a second inning RBI single and 2-2 with a solo home run in the seventh. Florence finished four-for-five with four RBIs.

The Bluefish had runners on base in all innings except the first. They stranded 14 runners over the course of the game as they out-hit the Bears 15-13. Jesse Hoorelbeke had three hits with a double and a run scored. Ryan Bear, Jay Caligiuri and Alex Prieto all added two hits apiece.

The Bears scored the go-ahead run in the ninth on an RBI fielder’s choice by Bobby Hill. The Newark infielder just barely beat out a throw from Bluefish shortstop Alex Prieto that would have ended the inning. The Bears tacked on one more when Hoorelbeke lost a high pop up that allowed catcher Scott Knazek to score.

Tim Sweeney added another great game offensively to lead the Bears. The infielder went three-for-five with a double, RBI and a run scored. He notched seven base knocks in the three-game series.
Eddy Ramos (1-3) picks up the Bridgeport victory with a scoreless tenth inning of work. J.J. Trujillo (1-6) picked up the loss with 1.2 innings of work and three runs allowed on three hits. The Newark reliever served up the game-tying double to Florence and the game-winner to Lopez.

The Bluefish now head into the All-Star break at 4-2 in the second half. They will return to play this Friday with a three-game road series against the Somerset Patriots. Eric DuBose (5-2) will likely get the nod in the first game after the break.
