Patriots Crush Sharks 12-3

CAMDEN , NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Camden Riversharks 12-3 in front of 3,521 fans at Campbell ’s Field on Saturday evening.
The Patriots broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Somerset loaded the bases when second baseman Gera Alvarez reached on a bunt fielder’s choice to the mound, a one out single to left by centerfielder Elliott Ayala and a walk by shortstop Teuris Olivares. Leftfielder Michael Ryan then drew a bases loaded walk to force in Alvarez and designated hitter Josh Pressley followed by crushing a grand slam home run (14) to left that cleared the bases.
The Riversharks answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning to make it 5-1 when third baseman Gabe Suarez hit a lead off single to center, advanced to second on a single off the left field wall by catcher Cody Collet and came around to score on a one out RBI single to right by first baseman Ron Davenport.
Somerset added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-1. The Patriots loaded the bases when Olivares drew a lead off walk, Pressley reached on a fielder’s choice to shortstop and a hit-by-pitch to third baseman Matt Hagen. Olivares then scored on RBI groundout by rightfielder Ryan Radmanovich and Pressley would scamper home on a wild pitch later in the inning.
The Patriots added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead. Pressley ripped a lead off double off the left field wall and came around to score when Hagen followed with a RBI double down the left field line. Somerset then loaded the bases when Radmanovich drew a walk and first baseman Vito Chairavalloti lined a single to left. Catcher Jason Belcher was hit-by-a-pitch to force in Hagen and then Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated Radmanovich. Chiaravavalloti would score on a one out sacrifice fly to left by Olivares.
Camden got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 11-3. Shortstop Bobby Gandolfo led off with a single to center and moved into scoring position on a two out single to center by designated hitter Tyler Von Schell. Leftfielder Sheldon Fulse drove them both in with a two run double into the left field corner.
Somerset scored their final run in the top of the ninth inning to make it 12-3. The Patriots loaded the bases on three straight walks to Belcher, Alvarez and Ayala. Olivares then followed with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Belcher.
Patriots’ starter Jim Magrane (4-6) picked up the win, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out six and walking one in seven innings of work. Riversharks’ starter Frederico Baez (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one in 2.2 innings pitched.
With the win the Patriots improved to 3-2 in the second half and 43-32 overall on 2008 season while the Riversharks dropped to 1-4 and 41-34.
