Hertzler Bears Down on Newark
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 13, 2008
BRIDGEPORT, CT – Bridgeport Bluefish starter Barry Hertzler looked like the pitcher that helped anchor Tommy John’s rotation through the first half with a strong outing on Saturday. The Bristol, CT resident shut down the Newark Bears en route to a 9-6 Bluefish victory. Hertzler (4-6) snapped a rough stretch of four consecutive losses to help his team improve to 3-2 in the second half and 36-39 overall.
One of eight Bluefish named to the 2008 All-Star game, Hertzler allowed two runs (zero earned) on three hits with three walks and three batters fanned over his six innings of work.
The Bridgeport bats provided plenty of run support for Hertzler with six runs through the first three innings. The ‘Fish plated three in the first on a pair of RBI singles by Calvin Pickering and Branden Florence and a fielding error on Newark catcher Scott Knazek. Jesse Hoorelbeke, another 2008 All-Star, cranked a towering solo home run (17) in the fifth to pad his league lead in long balls and finished two-for-three with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bluefish catcher Brian Munhall blasted his fourth home run of the year in the second and added an insurance RBI single in the eighth to finish two-for-four with two RBIs and a run.
The majority of the Bluefish offense came at the hands of Newark ace Pat Stanley (8-3). The burly right-hander worked six innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. It was his third consecutive start allowing at least six runs to cross the plate.
The Bears did not go quietly after Hertzler left the game. They scored four runs over the final two frames off Bluefish relievers T.J. Tucker and Franklin Perez. Jose Herrera and Ramon Castro added an RBI single apiece in the eighth and combined finished the night four-for-eight with three RBIs and a run scored. Mike Just and Tim Sweeney each added two hits, a run and an RBI on the evening. Newark loaded the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate before Tommy John called on Matt Pike to get the final out of the game, earning his first save in 2008.
Bridgeport goes for the sweep tomorrow at 2:05 P.M. Rafael Bergstrom (4-5) will make his first start in ten days for ‘Fish and square off against the Atlantic League wins leader Mike Bumstead (9-5).
