Gibbons Walk-off Wins It

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – Jay Gibbons hit a home run in the 10th inning, and the Long Island Ducks claimed the rubber game of their three-game series against Newark on Thursday, defeating the Bears 7-6 before a past-capacity crowd of 6,318 at Citibank Park.
The extra-inning homer came off Newark reliever J.J. Trujillo (1-5), who was dealt the loss. Joe Valentine (5-2), who had surrendered the tying run in the ninth, worked a perfect 10th and picked up the win. Randy Leek started for Long Island and pitched seven innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. Jose Garcia went six and one-third innings for the Bears, allowing six runs on 10 hits.
The Ducks built up a 6-0 lead over the first two innings. P.J. Rose and Richard Hidalgo both clubbed two-run homers in the first, while Rose and Carl Everett delivered RBI in the second. The Bears came back with four in the third, hitting three doubles in the inning, and one in the fourth. The tying run scored on a bloop single down the left field line in the ninth by Bobby Hill.
Rose went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Hidalgo had two hits and a pair of RBI. Edgardo Alfonzo continued to swing well since returning to the club, turning in a 2-for-4 performance.
The Ducks hit the road this weekend for their final series before the All-Star break. Long Island visits Lancaster for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
