By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 10, 2008
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – The Long Island Ducks evened their series with Newark on Wednesday, defeating the Bears 9-8 before a sellout crowd of 6,014 at Citibank Park.
The Ducks rallied from a two-run deficit with three in the ninth to take the second game of the three-game set. Ray Navarrete’s infield hit with the bases loaded brought in the winning run when catcher John Pachot could not get a handle on the ball as it rolled along the grass. Earlier in the frame, Edgardo Alfonzo had come through with a game-tying single, capping a 2-for-3 night in his first game back with the Flock. Alfonzo scored four runs and drew two walks in the contest as well. Navarrete went 3-for-6 at the plate with four RBI. Jamie Pogue had a stellar game at the plate, going 5-for-5 while driving in two. Meanwhile, the Bears got home runs from Ramon Castro, who drove in three runs, and Joe Herrera, along with a two-RBI performance by Gerard Haran.
Alay Soler pitched six innings for Long Island, allowing six runs – three earned – on six hits. Counterpart Benito Baez worked seven frames, giving up four runs – three earned – on nine hits. Joe Valentine (4-2) got the win in relief, and former Duck Steve Kent (3-4) took the loss, allowing the three ninth inning runs. Ryan Knippschild contributed with two scoreless innings for Long Island.
