Crabs Spank the Pats, 8-2
By Atlantic League Independent Wire Services on July 9, 2008
WALDORF, MD – The Blue Crabs picked up their fifth consecutive game Wednesday night, knocking off the Somerset Patriots for the second straight game by a score of 8-2.
The Southern Maryland offense started early, with George Sandel picking up a single on the second pitch of the game. The shortstop was able to break up a double play attempt on a John Ramistella groundout, and Clinton Johnston followed up with a ground rule double to move Ramistella to third base. Following a Patrick Osborn walk to load the bases, Eric Crozier grounded out to second, but picked up an RBI in the process.
Johnston would add two more hits to that double, finishing the night 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Johnston also put the icing on the cake in the eighth inning, blasting a solo home run to left field for his lone RBI of the game.
Eric Crozier would also hit a home run, as the DH followed a Patrick Osborn triple with a bomb of his own to right field. Crozier finished with three RBI in the game, as well as a walk.
Osborn was 1-for-3 on the night, but scored two runs and had a walk to go along with his triple. The all-star was brought home following a walk in the seventh inning by a Chris Maples bases loaded triple, which also plated Johnston and Jeremy Owens.
Jonathan Connolly had his best outing in a Blue Crabs uniform, going 6.1 innings and striking out nine batters. He allowed only one hard hit ball, and the only run scored against him was unearned. Connolly also had zero walks in the contest.
Mike Gibbs will take the hill for the home team tomorrow as the two teams wrap up the series. The game will have a special start time, with the first pitch coming at 11:00 am. Gibbs pitched five scoreless innings in his first career start, striking out four in the process.
