Patriots Shut Out Ducks 6-0

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – The Somerset Patriots, led by eight scoreless innings by starter Andy Van Hekken and three home runs, defeated the Long Island Ducks 6-0 before 5,877 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Monday night.
The Patriots got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Sean Smith doubled and scored on a two-run home run by designated hitter Josh Pressley (8). It was the fourth straight game that Pressley hit a home run.
Somerset added two runs to the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Teuris Olivares doubled and scored on a two-run home run by third baseman Brandon Larson (9) to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.
The Patriots continued to extend the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Left fielder Matt Hagen singled and scored on a two-run home run by first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti for a 6-0 advantage.
Van Hekken (3-1) picked up the win, allowing just two hits and six strikeouts in eight innings. Ducks starter Jon Searles (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home on Tuesday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Long Island Ducks The game includes Beach balls for the first 1,000 kids in attendance and Health Fair Night courtesy of Somerset Medical Center.
